This is why this painting technique (like delftware) is called underglaze painting as it is done directly on the bisqueware before the glazing

As we have almost forgotten, delftware once was meant as an imitation of imported, thus very expensive Asian porcelain (in the late 16th and 17th century). And so gradually became a style of its own. Now at Dutchceramics we bring back some of its Asian roots in our delftware from Holland. The frontside shows a handpainted geisha, and on the backside a demon ghost.
