唐草紋様はどこまでも続き絡み合う蔓の様子から、「子孫繁栄」「長寿」などの意味を持つ吉祥紋様として親しまれてきました。

また、水は時に大河や大波となることから「大きな変化」をあらわすともされています。

一反すべてに同じ柄が繰り返される小紋の制作は簡単と思われがちですが、数十～数百の型紙を使用し均一に染め上げるため技術と根気が必要となる伝統的な技術です。
